University College Birmingham

University College Birmingham is a state-sector UK Higher Education
Institution with a history stretching back to the late 1800s. Regulated
by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education,
it has a long-standing reputation for high quality and academic rigour.
The name of the institution was recently changed to University College
Birmingham by the Government’s Privy Council in December 2007, having
formerly been known as Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative
Studies.
Situated close to the city centre, University College Birmingham is
the UK's only specialist college for hospitality and tourism management
training programmes. Subjects taught at the College include chef
catering, bakery, food and consumer management, culinary arts,
hospitality, tourism, adventure tourism, childcare and hairdressing and
beauty therapy.
The College has an excellent international
reputation and is the winner of many awards including Centre of
Vocational Excellence for Catering and Hospitality and Hairdressing and
Beauty Therapy, Beacon Centre of Excellence and the title of Best Hotel
School in the UK (2001).
There are currently over 6,500 students
at the College studying for vocational qualifications, higher national
diplomas, degrees and Masters degrees. Independently administered, the
College has its own campus. University College Birmingham has its own
taught degree awarding powers, however, many of the degrees and
postgraduate qualifications are awarded by the University of Birmingham
under an accreditation agreement held since 1994.
Facilities at
the College are some of the best in the UK and include four training
restaurants, The Spa which includes three hairdressing salons, four
holistic therapy salons, a spa pool, steam room, sauna, solarium and
flotation therapy suite. There is also a multi-gym, dance studio and
fitness assessment suite.
Student accommodation includes The
Maltings, a purpose built halls of residence with over 849 en-suite
bedrooms in a canal-side location in the city centre. On site
facilities include a bar, large sports hall, shop and laundries.
Over
1100 international students from 65 different countries currently study
at the College. Plus, the College has now made established links in
Hong Kong, the Maldives and Jamaica where many students are studying for
a University of Birmingham Masters degree qualification.
