Dr. Clark is currently Professor of Materials Engineering and
Professor of Engineering Systems at MIT, where he has been on the
faculty since 1975. He has served as Director of the Center for
Technology, Policy and Industrial Development, Director of the
International Motor Vehicle Program and of the Materials Systems
Laboratory.
Dr. Clark founded the Materials Systems Laboratory in 1983 to work
closely with industrial partners. More than 50 companies from the U.S.,
Asia, Europe and Latin America have sponsored this work. Highlights of
the research have been the development of:(1) Technical Cost Modeling,
to simulate the cost of processing materials and products, depending
upon the technology, product design and manufacturing environment; (2)
Multi-attribute Utility Assessment, to estimate the demand for materials
and products as a function of the properties of the materials employed;
(3) A life cycle analysis methodology for analyzing the cost and
environmental impact of changes in product design and manufacturing
technologies. Computer models of the major processes for manufacturing
and assembling final products and components have been developed. The
computer tools are being used for teaching at other universities and by
design groups at a number of major companies and national
laboratories.
